Botanical description
A pleasantly smelling tree, reaching a height of about 10-13m, with tender branches. The leaves are long, green on the upper surface, and yellowish-smoky on the lower surface. The flowers are yellow and fragrant. The fruit is egg-shaped, with a long fleshy skin. The ovate brown seed has a hard covering. The seed has a yellowish-red fleshy cover, which separates on drying and is called jatipatri, while the seed itself is called jatiphala. The tree flowers during the rainy season, followed by fruition.
