It is a famous plant profoundly found in the Western ghats and Konkan. It is extensively used while cooking in various preparations by the people in Konkan, Maharashtra. Kokum sharbat is a famous coolant used in summer by the people of India. It has a sweet and sour taste, hence causing the प्रीणन ( nourishes the dhatus of the body). It is offered as a welcome drink to the guests, mainly by the people of Maharashtra.
In Ayurveda, this plant is described to be Vaat and Kaphshamak, that is it balances the Vaat and Kaph Doshas. The fruit has medicinal uses.
It is hot in potency and hence acts on the Agni (digestive power).
Due to its sour taste, it relieves the person from anorexia.
This plant has been shown to have hepato-protective properties. Hence its preparations can be used by those suffering from liver diseases to prevent further damage of the organ.
