This herb is of importance, mainly in the treatment of diseases in children. It is included by Charak in the संज्ञास्थापन गण, it helps in restoring the consciousness of the patient. For this purpose, choorna of vekhand is blown into the nose of an unconscious patient (this is known as प्रधमन नस्य). It is also a cure for many types of rhinitis and sinusitis, but should not be used by healthy people on a normal basis.
It acts on the kapha and vaata doshas, due to its hot potency. Katu rasa (bitter taste ) is known to act on the agni, and it aids digestion. Relieves the bloating and causes मलशोधन (helps in evacuating the bowel ).
It acts on the indriyas (senses), mainly on the sensory nerves. According to Ayurveda, all the indriya points are situated in the mastishka, that is the brain. Any abnormalities in these indriyas affect any one or two or all of the senses. It is also said to be बुध्दी, मेधा वर्धक means it increases intelligence and brain power. Hence it is traditionally given to all growing infants under guidance.
It acts on the uterus and increases its contractions, hence is used in oligomenorrhea.
