Also known as सुंठ in Marathi, which is dried ginger, and the one known as आलं or आर्द्रक is the fresh ginger. Both are an integral part of our spices. Although both are derived from the same plant and are similar, their properties differ in some manner. Dry ginger is लघु,which means easy to digest and aids digestion, and स्निग्ध.
Whereas, fresh ginger is रुक्ष, तीक्ष्ण, गुरू. Due to its तीक्ष्ण property, it may not suit those with pitta prakriti. On the other hand, shunthi is relatively safe to use. It acts best on Vaata and Kaph Doshas.
It acts mainly on the digestive and respiratory systems. Shunthi choorna alone or with some other shwasnashak choorna like sitopaladi, pippali, etc with honey, relieves cough with expectoration. It relieves bloating and also acts as शूलघ्न that reduces pain.
Due to its analgesic effect, it is used for joint pain and also used in fever where the skin becomes cold, शीतज्वर.
